Lesson 7: Your First Solo

In this lesson, you'll fly solo around the pattern. Upon successful completion of the flight, you'll earn a Solo Certificate.

You should complete all the Student lessons and be comfortable with the skills required to take off, climb, level off, turn, descend, and land.

ABOUT THE FLIGHT

You will depart on runway 19 at Bremerton National airport. You instructor will communicate with you by hand-held radio during the flight. He will give you instructions on when to take off and climb to 1500 feet. He'll instruct you when to turn to fly around the pattern. You'll fly an approach back to runway 19 and land. Your instructor will not be able to help you control the airplane in any way, but he will help you out with verbal instructions. Once lined up with the runway, he will let you complete the approach and landing without verbal assistance. If you land and come to a complete stop on the runway, your instructor will issue you a solo certificate.

KEY COMMANDS TO REMEMBER

F7 to lower the flaps in 10-degree increments.

FLIGHT CRITERIA

You'll be required to maintain:

  • Altitudes within 100 feet of your assignment
  • Power settings within 100 RPM as assigned
  • Airspeeds no more than 10 knots above assigned airspeed except on takeoff, where you must rotate at no more than 10 knots above and no more than 5 knots below 55 knots.
  • Heading within 10 degrees as assigned
  • Pitch within 3 degrees as assigned
  • Bank with 10 degrees as assigned.
